The castle was built in the 18th century. The magnificent ballroom created by Italian stucco workers dates back around 1712. Despite of a fire in 1742 at the castle island, the castle itself only suffered minor damage. The significance of the castle for the history of arts is due to its spatial arts, that is almost completely intact. It is currently being restored.
Herzog Adolf Friedrich (1738-1794), made famous by the novel "Dörchläuchting" by Fritz Reuter, lived at times in the Mirow castle. Sophia Charlotte (1744-1810) was born in the so called Mirow Lower castle. As wife of George III. she ascended the English throne in 1761. The present-day building is a rebuilding.
Though the Mirow court left the castle in 1761, every so often it returned for summer vacations or funerals.
